Checking Out The Benefits Of Yoga For Kids

By Cara S Burnaby

If you are a parent you may be concerned with the fitness level of your children. Many young people get very little physical exercise and this lead to problems at home and school. If you want your children to get up and move, consider the benefits of yoga for kids.

Yoga is very good for the mind and body, and it is just as good for young people as it is for adults. Exercise is great for stress relief. Stretching postures help to increase awareness of the body and improve coordination. Joints become looser and stronger and even though children have good flexibility, young joints can stiffen without frequent activity. A qualified instructor knows that a child's attention span is different from grownups and makes allowances. Classes are simple and poses are introduced one at a time, until they are mastered. Children are allowed to learn at a pace that is comfortable.

New activities expose children to new experiences. Exercise is a much needed break from school, computers, and video games. When one opens the mind to new experiences it allows for inner growth. As children grow, it teaches them to be comfortable in their own bodies.

Maybe your child is not interested in the usual sports like tennis, baseball, or football. The benefits of yoga for kids include self confidence. Not all children have special sports talents, but everyone can participate in an exercise class. This provides a great physical outlet without having to endure the stress of competition. It can help many children better deal with all the social pressures they face today.

It is never too early to expose young minds and bodies to the pleasures of yoga. That is why you will find some excellent mother and baby classes. It may not appear to be beneficial at first, but within a few years children will become used to the activities and will enjoy them. There are some good classes for small children that are age appropriate and easy for them to participate in and enjoy.

If you decide to enroll your child in classes, check the teacher's credentials. Certified instructors provide the best learning experience, and this will give your child the most from the course. Some classes may require children to be dropped off. However, it is a good idea to get permission to stay so you can see how the instructor deals with the children.

If you cannot find classes close by, try teaching yoga to your kids in the home. All you need is some mats and music for the children. Let them choose the music and begin with some easy to perform poses and breathing. A three part breathing routine will provide a great starting point.

The benefits of yoga for kids are just as important for children as adults. Kids will enjoy poses like the "Dog" and "Cat Stretch". The "Cobra" and "Tree" poses are effective as is the "Butterfly" and the "Sponge" (also called the "Corpse"). Use your imagination and the important thing is to move and have fun.
