Yoga is a blend of spiritual, mental and physical disciplines and practices in achieving enlightenment which originated from ancient India. It is a popular physical exercise form in western countries though it is quite different in Indian traditions. Studies to determine its effectiveness as complementary intervention to some diseases have been done but results were inconclusive.

Anyone can start doing this by joining others in classes so that they would be able to learn more about the proper ways of doing it. There are African American yoga classes Chicago who people with color can comfortably attend but is also open for everyone. Here are some tips in finding one in your area you can join.

Start searching in your area for establishments using the internet that offers these classes and get their contact information. You may also try the yellow pages or the local newspapers as there could be advertisements about them in there. Create a list of those you have found and get more information about them.

Ask for recommendations from your family and friends as they may have or still is taking classes. They will be telling you the experience they had with this activity and who was the instructor they were under at that time. If the ones recommended are not yet on the list then add them and gather more information on them too.

Make some background research about the yoga instructor that includes the number of years have they been instructing. The number of years will indicate their capabilities of staying and teaching students who regularly comes. This could mean they are more preferred compared to others in teaching proper ways to do yoga.

Ask them what are the differences between their class from other forms of exercise and if they answered and explained it well to you then they are knowledgeable enough. Some of them can give amazing answers and some can be quite disappointing and may not have one answer at all. The yoga practice is more than getting strong, stretching, social experience or having fun.

Read some online testimonials and reviews to know the opinions of those who have been their students currently and previously. This will also be your way of knowing if there were negative opinions or complaints that have been raised against them. You could find these things in websites where users are allowed to write reviews about certain things.

Ask them how they prepared to become a yoga instructor and where they educated formally or not. Great teachers could either be educated formally or not as long as they were able to give you a solid answer clearly which means they have the knowledge and skills required. If they do not have a clear answer then you better start looking for another one.

Try out beginner classes first so you would learn the different basic concepts that may not be present in other exercises. You will comfortable about not being knowledgeable because you are just the same with other students there. Try out different classes as well until you will find the class and instructor you like to be practicing with and suits you best.
