What Are Microdermabrasion Crystals And How Are They Used

By Dawn Williams

As humans, the cells in our body have a normal life cycle. Old cells die, are shed, and are replaced with new cells. The skin is the same way. As we get older, however, cell reproduction slows down and continues to slow as time passes. Since new cells are not getting reproduced, the old cells still die and are shed, but they build up on the surface of the skin. This can lead to wrinkles becoming appearing more pronounced, a dull appearance, and blocked pores. Although there are many different ways to rectify these issues, a cosmetic procedure that uses microdermabrasion crystals can help.

This cosmetic method is generally simple and can be performed in a spa, salon, or other facility that specializes in cosmetic skin procedures. An experienced individual operates a special machine or machines. The first step is to apply suction to the skin to remove dirt, excess oils, and loose dead skin cells. Suctioning also helps increase circulation to the skin, which aids in the natural rejuvenation process. Additionally, the stimulation helps increase the ability of the lymph nodes to drain.

After the suctioning, a crystal material is blasted at the surface of the skin. Some facilities will use a different machine for this step, while others have machines that handle all steps in the procedure. The blasting of the special material removes any cells that were still present after suctioning. Baking soda and aluminum oxide are common substances that are used to make the crystal material.

Once the material has been blown at the skin, the technician will suction the skin surface again. The material and dead skin cells are removed. In most cases, the result is usually smoother and younger looking skin. Pores are open after the procedure, allowing the skin to get more oxygen and appear healthier.

This procedure is a common alternative to invasive and often unnecessary cosmetic surgery or similar types of treatment. Surgery comes with a lot of risks that are undesirable to many people, and it is often reserved for extreme skin issues that are not limited to just the surface of the skin. The time for recovery following this procedure is shorter, and there are minimal risks.

One of the common reasons why people undergo a procedure using the crystal material is because there are visible wrinkles. Some people with light scarring from acne are also included. Difficult issues that occur further into the skin layers generally do not benefit from the procedure because it only removes impurities from the surface.

As with many other types of procedures, there are some disadvantages, generally limited to the side effects that can be experienced. The surface of the skin may be irritated and red for a few days following a session. Some people have also had flaking or peeling.

Many issues that occur on the surface of the skin are not usually rectified with one session. It is often necessary to undergo at least three or four sessions with the microdermabrasion crystals. To avoid permanent damage to the skin or developing an infection, sessions should be spaced out with at least a few weeks between them.
